LGMD is the name for a group of conditions that cause both weakness and wasting of the muscles that get worse over time. It is the fourth most common type of muscular dystrophy and affects both males and females equally. There are approximately 30 known subtypes of LGMD, each one with a different genetic cause.
Because the signs and symptoms of LGMD are similar to other muscle disorders, genetic testing is an important tool to identify the specific subtype and help your doctor create a treatment plan.
